Constructing theoretically informed measures of pause duration in experimentally manipulated writing

Abstract This paper argues that traditional threshold-based approaches to the analysis of pauses in writing fail capture complexity cognitive processes involved text production. It proposes that, these processes, pause should focus on transition times between linearly produced units text. Following a review some problematic features analysis, is divided into two sections. These are designed demonstrate: (i) how isolate relevant transitions within and calculate their durations; (ii) use mixture modelling identify structure distributions at different locations. The uses set keystroke logs collected from 32 university students argumentative texts about current affairs topics demonstrate methods. In first section, it defines calculated using reproducible framework, explains distinction linear non-linear transitions, sections identified. provides Excel scripts for automatically identifying calculating duration. second section applies sentence, sub between-word within-word boundaries each participant. concludes cannot be characterised by single distribution “cognitive” pauses. proposes, further, words three-component reflecting lexical, supra-lexical reflective while other locations can modelled two-component distinguishing fluent less or more processing. recommending rather than imposing fixed thresholds distinguish researchers instead impose common theoretically informed data estimate parameters vary individuals under conditions.
